    Confederate Cemetary & Memorial and Prison Site
    This site near the Mississippi River held over 11,000 Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. This site as well as the memorial and cemetary, which is located on Rozier St. in Alton, are dedicated to the soldiers that died during their incarceration.

    The Creole House
    This French creole style house was built in 1800 by a pioneer settler from South Carolina. It has since been expanded and refurbished and is decorated with period antiques.

    Lincoln Douglas Square
    The site of the last of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, this square features statues of the two historical figures. Located near the Mississippi riverfront.

    Yanda Log Cabin

    Believed to have been built in 1853, this log cabin is one of the oldest surviving structures in the Glen Carbon area. The restored cabin is available for meetings and other events.

    Piasa Bird
    The Piasa Bird is a recreation of a Native American petroglyph, or wall painting, of a legendary creature. The current painting is 48 by 22 feet in size on a bluff one mile north of Alton.

    Lovejoy Monument
    This monument is dedicated to Elijah P. Lovejoy, an early abolitionist and journalist, who was murdered defending his printing press. Visit his memorial in the Alton Cemetary, and see other exhibits about his life at the Alton Museum of History and Art.

    Peterstown House and Log Cabin
    This house remains the last stagecoach stop along the Kaskaskia Trail, and also served as a store, tavern, inn and performance house in various stages throughout its history. The house has been refurbished and contains artifacts and antiques from the late 19th century.
